Baptism is an outward declaration of an inward change. This means that baptism does not save us, but rather it is a response of faith and obedience to Jesus, who is the only one who can and does save us.
It is a response of faith because Jesus demonstrated it for us by getting baptized himself, so we declare that we want to follow Jesus’ way of life by doing what He does by faith. It is a response of obedience because Jesus commanded it in Matthew 28:18-19.
Baptism is full of powerful symbolism saturated in truths that galvanize and ground us. The first symbol is the immersion underwater; the water symbolizes the grave. In the same, Jesus died and was buried, and we, too, have our sins and old way of life buried in a watery grave. The second symbol is the water itself, symbolizing a washing or cleansing of our sin. The third symbol is being resurrected to a new life. When we are brought back out of the water, much like Jesus was brought out of the grave, we are resurrected to a new way of life committed to following Jesus in faith and obedience.
WHY GET BAPTIZED?
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Those who confess that Jesus has forgiven their sin, has given Him control over their life, and is changing them from the inside out! They believe in their hearts and by their actions that He has been raised from the dead. If you can honestly say that you have acknowledged your sin and asked for forgiveness from Jesus, have submitted your life to His direction, and are beginning to live like you believe Jesus is alive, then Baptism is for you!
